No. 17 Team Ethanol Honda/Dallara/FirestoneThere was never a doubt that Jeff Simmons would become a race car driver. While most kindergartners were learning their letters and numbers, 5-year old Jeff had already won a regional and national quarter-midget championship. At 15, when his friends were getting learners’ permits, Jeff had more than 150 victories and 10 consecutive regional championships to his credit. As a student at Boston College (BS 1998), Simmons ran in the Barber Dodge Series, becoming just the second driver in history to win the championship as a rookie (former RLR driver and 1999 Indy 500 champion Kenny Brack was the other). From there, it was straight to the IndyCar® Series, driving for Team Green’s Indy Lights program. That program ended in 2000, and it would be three years before Jeff Simmons would race again. After that, Simmons returned to the Indy Pro Series with a vengeance – and quickly became the winningest driver in series history. RLR wanted to test him during the 2006 season. March of that year, however, marked the tragedy that took Paul Dana’s life. And suddenly, Simmons was named to replace him. On the track that year, Simmons led two races and posted six top-ten results. Even more remarkable, he finished second in the IndyCar Series Rookie of the Year standings, running in only 12 of 14 races. Off the track, Jeff Simmons has become an advocate for renewable energy sources and has the frequent flyer miles to prove it. He’s traveled all over the U.S. promoting ethanol and its environmental and performance benefits. “I’m proud to help lead the greening of racing with ethanol. It’s an honor to showcase the merits of this high-performance fuel in the world’s most powerful racing machines.” When he’s away from racing, Simmons enjoys golf, music, jet skiing, scuba diving and reading. His favorite off-season destination is Grand Cayman. To learn even more about Jeff Simmons, browse our site or visit JeffSimmons.com. |
